Postdocs

We currently have no funded positions. We announce future positions on the robotics-worldwide mailinglist. However, interested applicants may contact Wolfgang Hönig regarding potential external fellowships (e.g., Einstein International Postdoctoral Fellow, DFG Walter Benjamin Programme).

PhD Students

PhD in Germany is different than other countries: There is no fixed admission cycle (it's like a regular job) and usually no structured program (you don't take any classes). Because of the latter, a MS degree is generally a prerequisite. If you are looking for a fixed admission cycle, consider ELLIS (which we are currently not a part of).

PhD Student for Motion Coordination for Heterogeneous Aerial Swarms in Congested Environments

Deadline: March 13, 2026

Hours: TV-L 13, 100 %

Research for the DFG project "Motion Coordination for Heterogeneous Aerial Swarms in Congested Environments", i.e. in the field of multi-robot systems with a particular focus on combined decision making and controls for highly agile systems such as multirotors. The algorithm design will use and improve tools from informed search, imitation learning, and trajectory optimization.

Requirements:
• Successfully completed university degree (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline with outstanding performance
• Excellent previous work (e.g. in the form of final projects or publications) in the field of robotics, machine learning optimization or AI planning
• Outstanding analytical skills (such as linear algebra, calculus, AI theory)
• Strong programming skills, C++, Python, or Rust
• Good knowledge of German and/or English required

Desirable:
• Knowledge of machine learning, trajectory optimization, informed search, or planning
• Experience with multi-agent or multi-robot systems
• Experience with uncrewed aerial vehicles (e.g., Crazyflie, PX4, Arducopter) or other robotic systems
• Working knowledge of Linux
• Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS)
• Experience with embedded systems (e.g., firmware development in C)
